CFDA Welcomes Its Newest Members

Diane Von Furstenberg, President of the CFDA, welcomed 26 new inductees to the council, including Leisure Society designer Shane Baum, by hosting a cocktail party at the Park Avenue duplex of board member Vera Wang. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is a not-for-profit trade association of America’s foremost fashion and accessory designers. Getting through the application process was reason enough for us to celebrate, but officially joining the next generation of such a prestigious family is truly an honor for Baum.

We're back and at it after having 2 incredible tradeshows in both Paris and Las Vegas. At Silmo, we upgraded to a bigger booth and thanks to the relentless staff at Baumvision, we had our best show to date. The new Paul Frank Eyewear collection was very well received and we had so much fun being with the teams from our amazing partners, Barton Perreira and Moscot. Vision Expo West in Las Vegas couldn't have been better for us, as well. We were in the suites where impromptu grand piano sessions happen during international wine conspiracies.

If you haven't heard, it was a very special trade show season for us this year. We officially launched Shane Baum's first signature collection entitled Leisure Society. The ultra luxe collection, which features very limited production of four sunglass and five ophthalmic frames, took over three years to develop with each frame handmade in Japan by the world’s finest artisanal craftsman. We couldn't be happier with the response from the shows and we can't wait to see the Spring 11 Collection in the top doors across Europe and the US. Continuing his tradition of astounding/confusing us with bands we've never heard of...Llion, from our Vienna office, presents to you the best cello-metal band from Finnland... Apocalyptica!

3 of the 5 members visited the Vienna office to frink coffee (they don't drink before a performance) and all ended up with Modern Amusement sunglasses. Most of the Vienna office joined Apocalyptica backstage after their gig, where they drank some crazy Finnish drink that made them all very happy, and slightly sick the next day.

Fun had by all!

The 12th Annual Costa Mesa Wood Racquet Classic

Leisure Society, The Wood Racquet Foundation, and Rolls Royce Motor Cars of Newport Beach hosted The 12th Annual Costa Mesa Wood Racquet Classic this labor day weekend. The annual tennis tournament and fundraiser raised thousands of dollars to benefit The John Wayne Cancer Foundation with the help of all the good people and companies that contributed to the event, with a special thanks to Team Duke, Paul Frank, and A Restaurant. Mark Philippoussis, Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, Bob Hurley, and McG all showed up to swing the wood racquet around, but the team of Zaccardo/Hansen left as this year’s Champions. Their tour has included playing at Jazz Fest and the High Sierra Festival, as well touring with the Roots, and opening for a wide variety of acts, such as Snoop Dogg, Sharon Jones, and Gil Scott-Heron.

Swill Children is a record/press label started in 2009 by Jesse Hlebo, who is wearing Paul Frank Rx Meet me in the Dollar Bin. Jesse is Baumvision alumni, and recently became Parsons alumni by graduating from The New School with a BFA in photography. He was recently interviewed by Sup Magazine about his work with Swill Children, which has released work by various up-and-coming bands, including Lucky Dragons.

This week begins the release of the first of a four part print series that Jesse curated for Short Term Deviation, a collaboration between EFA Project Space. Along with the print series, he's curating a press library that will be part of the physical exhibition. The show opens on September 17th, at EFA project space, located at 323 W 39th St, 2nd Floor, NY, NY 10018.

In early November, check out his event at P.S. 1 as a part of the NY Art Book Fair. And stay tuned for new releases from Swill Children!

Here is a recap of The Second Annual Gefälshte Ski-Partei hosted by Baumvision owner Shane Baum in Newport Beach. Translated this means fake ski party, which is about as good as it gets here in Sunny Southern California. In homage to our Baumvision European headquarters based in Vienna, Austria, we bestowed the event with a decidedly Tyrolean flair serving Fiaker Goulash, Glüwein, Sacher Torte and Schnapps.

Mariachi El Bronx drummer Jorma Vik in MA 53's

Mariachi El Bronx is a side project of The Bronx which is recorded in a mariachi sound instead of their usual hardcore punk style. In the official video for their first single Cell Mates, Vik can be seen wearing Modern Amusement 53's in black/white. The 17th annual Noise Pop festival in San Francisco gave the Baumvision crew a chance to see some of our favorite performers. Noise Pop is San Francisco's favorite indie music, arts and film festival. Since its humble birth in 1993,the festival has grown into a widely respected brand. Noise Pop prides itself on bringing exposure to emerging artists, many of whom have gone on to widespread acclaim, including the White Stripes, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins, Bright Eyes, The Donnas, Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) and Silversun Pickups.

Stephen Malkmus can currently be seen in solo performances or with his latest band The Jicks. He is most famously known for being in Pavement, whose series of deluxe reissues continues with their fourth album Brighten the Corners.

Kelly Stoltz is a singer/songwriter from San Francisco whose music has been compared to that of Brian Wilson, the Velvet Underground, Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. He is currently on Sub Pop Records and his last release was 2008's Circular Sounds.

Mark Eitzel is a musician, best known as a songwriter and lead singer of the San Francisco band American Music Club, which recently reformed after a decade long hiatus.

Alex Gopher entered the French music scene in a pop band known as Orange, which featured future stars Etienne de Crécy and both members of the band Air. In 2001, he was asked by designer Yves St. Laurent for three tracks for their Yves' catwalk show, the end result was the critically acclaimed album Wuz. Gopher continues to release and produce records under his own label Solid.

With the new album, Skeletal Lamping, of Montreal did not want to just produce another object that just sits on a shelf, so they released the album in 10 different formats, including t-shirts, button sets, wall decals and tote bags with a digital download code for the album itself. Unfortunately, the Chinese lantern version of the album is already sold out on Polyvinyl Records online store. The band starts their U.S. tour on October 24th, it has not yet been confirmed whether or not the white horse from their last New York show will accompany them on the tour.
